چکیده

Approximately 350,000 to 500,000 ventral hernias are repaired yearly in the United States. These hernias include congenital umbilical hernias, incisional hernias from previous sur‐ geries, or epigastric hernias. The crux of hernia repair is honoring the principle of achiev‐ ing a tension‐free repair, often achieved with utilization of a synthetic mesh. Over the last quarter of this century, laparoscopic ventral hernia repair has established itself as a valuable tool in repair of ventral hernias, with the advantages of reduced postoperative complications. More recently, the adaptation of the robotic platform has given another tool to perform ventral hernia repairs. The aim of this chapter is to describe the evolution of ventral hernia repairs and highlight the robotic approaches to repair.

Ventral Hernia After Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Nephrectomy

Introduction: The incidence of incisional hernias after hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) ranges from 3 to 10%. Robotic-assisted ventral hernia repair is technically feasible and gaining popularity as an acceptable alternative to open repair. Case Report: We report a case of a robot-assisted repair for an incisional hernia from a hand-assist port site in a 50-year-old man after a hand-a...

Robotic TAPP Ventral Hernia Repair: Early Lessons Learned at an Inner City Safety Net Hospital

Background and Objectives Ventral hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed general surgery procedures, and minimally invasive approaches are increasingly preferred. The physiologic repair offered by the preperitoneal approach is favorable, with reduced complications, but it remains a technical challenge. The robotic platform allows for enhanced instrument flexibility and ease of oper...

Robotic Ventral Hernia Repair and Endoscopic Component Separation: Outcomes

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Robot-assisted hernia repair, combined with endoscopic component separation, has reduced recurrence and complication rates and allowed immediate intervention in obese patients. We sought to study surgical outcomes in this high-risk group of patients in a community hospital. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review of ventral, incisional, and umbilical hernia...

Comparative efficacy of Prolene and Prolene-Vicryl composite mesh for experimental ventral hernia repair in dogs

In this study, efficacy of two hernia mesh implants viz. conventional Prolene and a novel Prolene-Vicryl composite mesh was assessed for experimental ventral hernia repair in dogs. Twelve healthy mongrel dogs were selected and randomly divided into three groups, A, Band C (n=4). In all groups, an experimental laparotomy was performed; thereafter, the posterior rectus sheath and peritoneum were ...

Reducing Length of Stay Using a Robotic-assisted Approach for Retromuscular Ventral Hernia Repair: A Comparative Analysis From the Americas Hernia Society Quality Collaborative.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare length of stay (LOS) after robotic-assisted and open retromuscular ventral hernia repair (RVHR). BACKGROUND RVHR has traditionally been performed by open techniques. Robotic-assisted surgery enables surgeons to perform minimally invasive RVHR, but with unknown benefit. Using real-world evidence, this study compared LOS after open (o-RVHR) and rob...
